The City of Shorewood understands that recent federal law enforcement actions occurring in parts of the region may raise questions or concerns for residents. It is important to note that this is a fluid and evolving situation. However, we recognize that seeing federal agencies in nearby communities or in our neighborhoods can create uncertainty, and we want to offer clear information about the role of the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department (SLMPD) in these situations.
The SLMPD is responsible for enforcing Minnesota state laws and local ordinances. The Department does not enforce federal immigration laws, does not ask individuals about their immigration status, and does not gather or maintain information related to immigration. Enforcement of federal immigration law is solely the responsibility of federal agencies and occurs independently of local law enforcement.
Historically, the SLMPD has not been informed in advance of federal operations and does not direct, coordinate, or participate in those activities. If officers are present during federal actions, their role is limited to general public safety duties—such as maintaining order and supporting de-escalation—not immigration enforcement.
The City of Shorewood is committed to fostering a safe, welcoming community for all residents. The City of Shorewood will continue to support transparency, trust, and strong community relationships as we focus on the safety and well being of all who live in our community.
If you witness federal law enforcement activity, you are encouraged to stay calm, remain aware of your surroundings, and prioritize personal safety. You may contact SLMPD with any questions or ask for assistance by calling 952-258-5321 or 911.
